Biz Coach Insider+ - Fiftieth Edition

Biz Coach Insider+ - Fiftieth Edition

October 24, 2026•4 min read

The ICF 2025 Global Coaching Study counts 122,974 coach practitioners worldwide, generating $5.34 billion in revenue. Do the division. That's roughly $43K per coach.

Plenty of those coaches are part-time, so it's a rough number. Still, it tells the truth: the average coaching practice is a Creator-phase business.

Most coaches have a crystal-clear vision for their clients and almost none for themselves. That's a Leadership & Vision gap. And most can't tell you their real hourly rate. That's a Financial Acumen gap.

Know three numbers:

1️⃣ Effective hourly rate. Total revenue divided by total hours worked. Include sales calls, prep, admin, and follow-up. Not just session time.

2️⃣ Capacity ceiling. Billable hours per week × weeks worked × rate. Twenty client hours a week, 46 weeks, $200 an hour: $184K. That's your maximum, before a single slow month.

3️⃣ Client lifetime. Average monthly revenue per client × how many months they stay.

✳️ If your ceiling sits under $250K, you're not building a practice. You're filling a calendar.

➡️ This week's move: Calculate your capacity ceiling. Write it on a sticky note and put it where you'll see it.

You Are the Service. That's the Ceiling.

At Creator ($0 to $100K), selling your own time is the right move. You're proving the method works and learning who you serve best.

At Hustler ($100K to $250K), the calendar fills. Referrals come in. You raise rates. It feels like growth, and it is, right up until you hit the number from Topic 1. Then every new client costs you a weekend.

Operator ($250K to $500K) asks for something different. The service stops being you and becomes your method. That shows up three ways: productized offers with a defined scope, price, and outcome. Group or cohort delivery. And associate coaches who deliver your system, not their own improvisation.

What to let go of: being in every session. Sound familiar? It's the same founder dependency you coach clients out of every week.

✅ A written method someone else could deliver

✅ One flagship offer with a fixed price and a defined result

❌ Custom proposals for every prospect

❌ Calling yourself "the only one who can do it right"

If you took 30 days off, what would your practice earn?

➡️ This week's move: write your method as a numbered set of steps another coach could follow. If you can't, that's job one.

The Phases Apply to the Coach, Too

The core idea behind The CEO's Playbook for Scale is simple: every phase asks the owner to become a different kind of leader, and the business can't outgrow the owner's current role.

Most coaches read that and apply it to clients. Turn it inward.

A coach who has never built systems teaches systems from theory. Clients feel it. A coach who has never handed off delivery can't credibly guide an owner through their first manager hire. So, without meaning to, the coach caps the client at the last phase the coach personally lived through.

I've supported 30+ coaches. The ones whose clients stalled at a phase were almost always stuck at that same phase in their own practice.

Run this self-check:

1️⃣ What phase is your practice in, by revenue?

2️⃣ What phase are most of your clients in?

3️⃣ Have you led a business through the phase your best client is about to enter?

If question 3 is a no, you have two honest options. Build that experience yourself, or partner with people who already have it. Faking it isn't one of them.

➡️ This week's move: answer all three in writing. Then look at your client list and circle anyone already ahead of you.

Owner's Corner: Before you hire a coach, consultant, or fractional leader, ask two questions. What phase is your own practice in? Have you led a business through the phase I'm entering? A good one answers both without flinching.

CLOSING (unified)

Here's the question that ties all three together: which phase is your practice actually in, and which phase are you promising to take clients to?

If the gap bothers you, good. That's exactly why we built the Coach Partner model at My Biz Coaches. About 25 Coach Partners deliver the 7 Core Competencies and the 8 Phases of Scale with a proven system behind them, and the Certified My Biz Coach path is how you join them. Reply "PARTNER" and I'll send you the details.
