Niche Down to Scale Up: Why Generalist Coaches Struggle While Specialists Thrive, and How to Find Your Sweet Spot

Most coaches build their business to help everyone.

That’s exactly why they can’t grow.

I’ve watched this play out across 150+ clients and 30+ coaches I’ve worked with directly.

The Creator and Hustler phases ($0–$250K), that’s where generalist coaches live and die. I know, I have lived this myself.

They take any client. Any problem. Any industry.

They call it flexibility.

The market calls it noise.

When I built my coaching practice, I made the same mistake early on. Thought broad appeal meant broad reach.

It doesn’t.

Broad appeal means no one feels like you’re talking directly to them.

The coaches on my team who scaled the fastest, some even much faster than myself? Every single one had a clear lane. Executive transitions. Startup founders. Women stepping into their first C-suite role.

Clear niche. Clear messaging. Premium pricing. Faster close rates.

Here’s what specialists do differently:

1️⃣ They lead with WHERE they have undeniable credibility

Not what they like. Where they have proof.

2️⃣ They define WHO they serve with surgical precision

Not “small business owners.” Try “founders scaling from $500K to $2M who are drowning in operations.”

3️⃣ They market the PROBLEM, not the methodology

Nobody buys coaching frameworks. They buy relief from a specific pain.

4️⃣ They stop taking every client

✅ Right-fit clients energize you and produce results

❌ Wrong-fit clients drain you and damage your reputation

5️⃣ They charge what specialists charge

✳️ Generalists compete on price. Specialists compete on outcome.

Most coaches stay stuck at Hustler ($100K–$250K) because they won’t let go of “anyone who’ll pay me.”

The coaches who break into Operator ($250K–$500K) and beyond? They made one clear decision about WHO they serve.

And they stopped apologizing for it.

➡️ Your niche isn’t a limitation.

It’s your filter. Your brand. Your pricing power.

If someone asked your last 5 clients what kind of coach you are, would they give the same answer?

If not, you don’t have a niche. You have a practice that’s working against itself.
