Cash Flow Is Still Killing More Businesses Than Competitors Are.

Cash Flow Is Still Killing More Businesses Than Competitors Are.

Inflation (31%) and cash flow (29%... but flip that: Cash flow just passed inflation as the #1 named concern) remain the top two worries for small business owners in 2026.

I scaled a trucking company to $6M and 27 trucks in under a year.

On paper, we were profitable every single month. In real life, I lost sleep wondering if we'd cover payroll and fuel in the same week.

That gap between "profitable" and "solvent" is where most businesses die. Not to a competitor. To their own bank account.

New 2026 data confirms what I've watched play out for years: cash flow just overtook inflation as the #1 named concern for small business owners, 31% to 29%. Owners aren't scared of the guy down the street anymore. They're scared of their own AR aging report.

Here's where this shows up by phase:

1️⃣ Creator ($0-$100K). No buffer, no forecast, personal and business accounts blurred together. One slow month and you're covering payroll out of pocket, if you can at all.

2️⃣ Operator ($250K-$500K). Revenue looks great. Receivables are outpacing collections. You're financing growth on a credit card or line of credit instead of a plan. This is where I was with 27 trucks and freight brokers paying net-45 while fuel and insurance were due net-now.

3️⃣ Your own coaching business goes through this too. Booked out at Operator revenue but still checking your bank balance before you send an invoice reminder? Same disease, different industry.

What owners must let go of to move forward: the belief that revenue growth alone fixes cash problems. It doesn't. Growth without a cash plan just makes the crisis bigger and faster.

✅ DO build a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast, even a simple one.
✅ DO know your cash conversion cycle: how long from expense to collected revenue.
✅ DO separate personal and business accounts on day one.
✅ DO negotiate payment terms as hard as you negotiate price.

❌ DON'T confuse a healthy P&L with a healthy bank account.
❌ DON'T finance operations with debt because "the revenue is coming."
❌ DON'T wait until payroll week to find out you have a cash problem.

➡️ Profit is an opinion. Cash is a fact.

✳️ The businesses I've watched fail rarely lost to a better competitor. They ran out of cash while everyone thought they were winning.

If your biggest customer paid you 30 days late this month, would you still make payroll?

What's your real gap right now: revenue, margin, or timing?
