Getting Found by AI — Why ChatGPT Is the New Front Door
ChatGPT now handles ~17% of global queries, the first real dent in Google in 20 years. If buyers are asking AI "who's the best ___ near me," the new game is being cited, not ranked.
Google just took its first real punch in 20 years. Most business owners haven't even noticed the fight started.
ChatGPT now handles roughly 17% of global search queries. That's not a rounding error. That's a shift in where your next customer looks for you.
Here's what should worry you more. 43% of Google searches already end with zero clicks. People get their answer and never visit a website. And 80% of the sources AI cites don't even rank in Google's top 100.
➡️ Translate that. Ranking on Google and being found by AI are becoming two different games.
I saw this pattern once before. Early in my retail career we obsessed over foot traffic. Then digital changed how customers found us before they ever walked in the door. The stores that adapted first won the next five years. The ones still optimizing for the old game got left behind.
This hits hardest at the Creator and Operator phases of scale ($0–$500K). You're still building your name in the market. If AI already owns the "who's the best ___ near me" conversation, you can't afford to be invisible in it.
✳️ Here's where to start this week.
1️⃣ Claim and complete every listing. Google Business Profile, industry directories, review sites. AI pulls from these constantly.
2️⃣ Write like you talk to a client, not like you're chasing keywords. AI favors clear, direct answers over SEO-stuffed pages.
3️⃣ Get named. Reviews, interviews, guest posts, local press. AI cites sources that other sources already trust.
4️⃣ Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity what they say about your business today. If the answer is nothing, that's your starting line.
✅ Answer real customer questions in plain language on your site
✅ Build a reviews and referral engine on purpose
✅ Track what AI tools say about you monthly
❌ Don't assume your Google ranking protects you
❌ Don't wait until competitors own the AI answer first
❌ Don't treat this as a tech problem instead of a marketing problem
I built my career cleaning up underperforming stores and markets. The fix was rarely fancy. It usually came down to being where the customer was already looking, before a competitor got there first. Same principle. New front door.
If a customer asked ChatGPT right now who's the best in your industry near them, would your name come up?
