Your Best Customer Asked ChatGPT for a Gift. You Weren't in the Answer.

Your Best Customer Asked ChatGPT for a Gift. You Weren't in the Answer.

October 09, 2026•6 min read

So, your best customer asked ChatGPT for a gift.

Not "gift shops near me." A full sentence. Something like: "I need a gift for my mom who loves gardening, under $60, that arrives before Christmas."

ChatGPT answered. A few businesses made the list. Yours didn't. You never knew the question was asked.

Is your small business showing up in AI holiday shopping answers?
Probably not yet. And it's rarely about your product.

AI shopping tools recommend businesses whose offers answer the question in plain words: who it's for, what it costs, whether it's available, and when it arrives. Vague offers get skipped. Specific ones get named.

The numbers say this is already happening. Per Network Solutions' 2026 Holiday Marketing Playbook, citing McKinsey's 2026 ConsumerWise research, 68% of U.S. consumers used at least one AI tool in the past three months. The same playbook reports 17% plan to use AI specifically for holiday shopping.

QuickBooks' 2026 Holiday Shopping Survey of 6,000 U.S. consumers found 43% plan to use AI tools this season. That's up from 23% in 2024. Different surveys, different questions, same direction.

Here's the gap. In that same QuickBooks survey, only 46% of small business owners said they've taken steps to be easier to find through AI search or shopping tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. More than half haven't started.

Who does this hit hardest?
This is a Sales & Marketing problem with an Innovation & Technology fix. It lands hardest in the Creator phase ($0 to $100K) through the Operator phase ($250K to $500K) of the 8 Phases of Scale.

No marketing team. No agency. You're the marketing department and you're also packing the boxes. You win or lose on whether a stranger can find you in the little time you have.

By the Architect phase ($1M to $3M) someone else owns this. Right now, it's you.

What did 25 years in wireless retail teach me about this?
I spent 25 years in wireless retail. Every holiday season taught the same lesson.

A customer walks in and says, "I need something for my dad." The rep who wins asks two quick questions, then says the price, whether it's in stock, and whether it's ready by Friday. The rep who says "we have a lot of great options" loses the sale. Didn't matter how good the options were.

AI is the new rep on the floor. It hears the shopper's question, then looks for the business that answers it the way a good rep would.

"Great gifts for everyone" gives it nothing to repeat. "Gardening gift basket for moms, $48, in stock, ships in two days" gives it a sentence it can quote.

Same product. Different sentence. Different result.

Try This Today
You can do this in under an hour. No software to buy.
1️⃣ Write the three gift questions your customers would really ask. Full sentences, with a budget and a deadline. Example: "best gift for a new homeowner under $75, delivered this week."
2️⃣ Ask ChatGPT and Gemini all three. Write down who shows up. Screenshot it. Note whether you're named.
3️⃣ Pick your top three offers. Rewrite each in one sentence with four things: who it's for, price, availability, and delivery or booking deadline.
4️⃣ Put those sentences on your website, your Google Business Profile, and your product or service pages. Same wording everywhere. AI tools pull from all of them.
5️⃣ Run a service business? Do the same for gift certificates and year-end packages. Hours, dates, and who it's for.

✅ "Spa day gift certificate for busy moms, $120, emailed same day, good for 12 months."

❌ "Gift certificates available."

Is it worth an hour?
The cost is one hour and zero dollars. The upside is getting named in an answer your competitor isn't named in.

I won't promise you a flood of buyers by Friday. Nobody honest can. What I can say is that the test is cheap, and clearer offers help human shoppers too.

Two things to watch. First, AI repeats what you publish. If you write "in stock" and it isn't, you've bought yourself an angry customer. Update the sentence when inventory changes. Second, check your holiday hours on Google Business Profile today. The Network Solutions playbook says the same: keep your listings current and make sure product pages answer who it's for, what's included, and delivery timeframes.

AI is a tool. You and your team are still the limiting factor. It amplifies a clear offer and a sloppy one equally.

➡️ Coaches and consultants: this is an easy first win with a Creator or Operator client. One hour, no tool purchase, visible result.

Reflective Question
If your best customer asked ChatGPT for a gift tonight, what sentence would you want it to quote?

Quick Answers
How do I get my small business recommended by ChatGPT for holiday shopping? Write each offer in plain, specific terms: who it's for, price, availability, and delivery. AI tools pull from your website, Google Business Profile, and reviews, so keep all three consistent. It costs nothing to start.

Do shoppers really use AI to find holiday gifts? Yes, and the number is climbing. QuickBooks' 2026 survey of 6,000 U.S. consumers found 43% plan to use AI tools this holiday season, up from 23% in 2024.

Where should a small business start with AI holiday marketing? Fix your offer sentences and your Google Business Profile before buying any tool. Owners in the Creator and Operator phases of the 8 Phases of Scale get the most from this Sales & Marketing basic. My Biz Coaches helps owners work out where AI actually fits in their business.
