Biz Coach Insider - 46th Edition (9/26/26) - 94% of Owners Expect Growth in 2026. Most Are Confusing Hope With a Plan

Confidence Is Not a Forecast
94% of small business owners expect growth in 2026, an all-time survey high, according to OnDeck and Ocrolus's 2026 Small Business Cash Flow Trend Report. Same report: 31% name inflation and 29% name cash flow as their top live threats.

Confidence is not a forecast. Recognizing the gap between optimism and reality can help owners feel more confident and in control of their growth plans.

A forecast and a wish look identical on a whiteboard. They split apart the moment you ask three questions: What's my capacity to actually deliver more? What does my cash position look like? Does the month's growth cost money before it makes money? Who do I hire, and when, before I'm underwater instead of after?

✳️ A forecast is tied to capacity, cash, and a hiring plan. A wish is tied to how you feel in January.

I've watched owners chase a growth number with zero plan for the cash gap it creates. It's the single most common way ambition kills a good year.

➡️ This week's move: Write down your growth number, then explicitly list your capacity, cash, and hiring answers next to it. If you can't answer all three, you have a hope, not a plan. Take this step to ground your growth expectations in reality.

This marriage of Leadership & Vision and Financial Acumen can inspire owners to trust their plans, knowing they are grounded in reality.

Where Blind Optimism Gets Owners Killed, By Phase
Same optimism, different consequences depending on where you sit in the 8 Phases of Scale.

In the Creator phase ($0–$100K), unquestioning optimism looks like taking on more clients or orders than you can personally fulfill, because saying yes feels like growth. It isn't. It's just future you, exhausted, apologizing to customers.

Fast forward to the Architect phase ($1M–$3M), and the same optimism shows up differently. Now it's greenlighting a hiring spree or a new location off a sales projection instead of a cash flow model. The dollar amounts are larger. So is the fall.

What changes between the two? At Creator, you're the plan. At Architect, you need an actual plan that survives without you in the room every day.

✅ Growth backed by a capacity and cash model

❌ Growth backed by a good feeling about next quarter

Ask yourself: If 2026 goes exactly as well as you're hoping, does your business actually survive the success?

That question gets sharper at every phase between Creator and Architect. The owners who jump phases fastest, and I see this across the roughly 170 clients I've coached over the past 7 years, aren't the most optimistic ones. They're the ones who pressure-tested the optimism before they spent against it.

The Playbook Move: Marry Vision to the Model by backing your growth ambitions with solid financial and operational plans. This isn't just a suggestion; it's essential for sustainable scaling and avoiding overreach.
This one's a deep cut from The CEO's Playbook for Scale, not a pitch.

The chapter on Leadership & Vision makes a point that's easy to nod along with and hard to actually do: Vision without a financial model isn't leadership; it's storytelling. A CEO's real job is translating "I believe we'll grow" into "here's the capital, cash flow, and team required to make that true, and here's what breaks if I'm wrong."

That translation is the whole competency stack working together. Leadership & Vision sets the direction. Financial Acumen prices it out. Operational Excellence builds the machine that can actually hit the number.

Most owners stop at the first one. They set a target and call it a strategy.

Before committing to a 2027 number publicly, running it through your numbers can help owners feel secure and prepared for potential challenges.

If you want the full breakdown of how vision and financial modeling work together at each phase, it's in the book. This week, just run your own number through the three questions above before you say it out loud again.

CLOSING
So here's the real question for this week: Did you build your 2026 growth number, or are you hoping for it? And what will you do differently for 2027, knowing what you know now?

If you're not sure, that's worth 20 minutes on a call. Grab time for a free coaching conversation, or take the 5-minute Biz Navigator assessment to see exactly where the gap sits between your ambition and your model.

Reply and tell me which of these three hit closest to home. I read every one.
