Productize It: Turn Your Custom Service Into a Repeatable Machine

Edition: 106, July 27, 2026 | Competencies: Innovation & Technology · Operational Excellence · Sales & Marketing

Every custom proposal you write is a business you have to rebuild from scratch.

45% of service firms now sell a productized offer alongside custom work. Firms combining products and services grow revenue 18% faster than pure-service competitors. The math isn't close.

Operator ($250K–$500K): every deal gets a custom quote, a custom timeline, a custom headache.

Leader ($500K–$1M): you've hired help, but they can't deliver without you in the room. Bespoke work doesn't transfer.

Architect ($1M–$3M): the packaged clients close faster, complain less, and refer more than the ones who bought "whatever you and I figure out together."

Optimizer ($3M–$10M): the product line carries the margin the service line can't. You stop selling hours. You start selling a fixed outcome.

I learned this in wireless retail before the exit. The stores that scaled fastest ran one system: Same intake, same options, same close, every time. Custom felt personal. Packaged is what scaled.

Roadmap from custom to productized:

1️⃣ Pull your last 20 engagements. Find the 80% that repeat.
2️⃣ Name the outcome, not the activity. Sell the result.
3️⃣ Fix the price. A menu, not a quote request.
4️⃣ Build the delivery system. Templates, checklists, a set timeline.
5️⃣ Keep one custom tier for accounts that need it. Price it like the exception it is.

✅ Do:

1️⃣ Package your best-repeated engagement first
2️⃣ Give the offer a name and a fixed scope
3️⃣ Build the delivery kit before you sell it wider

❌ Don't:

1️⃣ Productize a service you've only delivered once or twice
2️⃣ Let "every client is different" become an excuse to skip systems
3️⃣ Price the packaged version like it's still custom

✳️ Coaches: This applies to your own practice first. Stop trading hours for a coaching call. Package your signature program. Same curriculum, same milestones, same price, delivered to more owners without rebuilding your calendar every week.

➡️ Bespoke work impresses. Packaged work scales. Only one of those builds an asset you can sell.

What percentage of your revenue right now comes from something you'd have to rebuild for the next client?
